CONCEPT:

The residents of Chiswick love the beautiful parks and waterways surrounding the peninsula, however, community consultation revealed that over 50% of respondents felt isolated. This work was part of a coordinated project to create more connections in the Chiswick Community.

Two workshops were held - one at St Andrew’s Kindergarten and the other at the Chiswick Community Centre - where the local community were invited to be involved in the creation of a public artwork.

Using a variety of drawing media - from traditional to digital - participants were asked to illustrate a variety of what might be found in and around the waters at Chiswick, imagined through a vertical cross-section, much like a core-sample drill.

  • Suggested elements included:
  • the sediment
  • plants growing on the sediment, eg, seagrass
  • lifeforms living on the sediment, eg, crustaceans, molluscs, their shells
  • lifeforms living in the water, eg, fish
  • lifeforms living off the water, eg, birds
  • visitors to the water, eg, swimmers, rowers, sailors
  • elements by the water, eg, residential and industrial buildings, parks, wharves, jettys, bridges
  • elements above the water, eg, birds, aeroplanes, clouds

Everyone enjoyed a happy and damn good social scribble, as the end result surely attests!
