CONCEPT:
In an effort to establish improved safety and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists, this purpose-built bridge forms part of a strategic link and provides a new connection to the Inner West Link Cycleway from the Sydney CBD. Increasingly more people use this part of the Bay Run, so it was imperative that the shared user path on the adjacent road bridge be replaced with this safer alternative.
To consolidate the connection between the new structure and the locals, residents were asked about themes relevant to the area that could be incorporated into the design of the new bridge. "Don’t forget our resident pelican!" was an endearing remark that verified the importance of birdlife to the area to be paramount, resulting in 'feather' balusters and a 'birdlife' apex panel as the final design solution.
The name Angel Bridge refers to the aspirational when 'taking flight', as we travel safely in the good company of our feathered friends, watched over from above.
